Got a minute? Learn something new! In this section we’ll present local specialties from a fun tidbit about different local regions in Japan.

Did you know?

Yasaka Shrine, in Kyoto’s Gion area, is the site of the Okera Festival. Beginning on the evening of December 31st, this traditional ritual is said to protect the family from illness and disaster in the coming year. Thin slats of wood, onto which people have written their wishes, are burned and shrine-goers light a straw rope from the fire to take home with them. The rope is used to ignite a fire and cook zoni, a special New Year’s soup consisting of mochi rice cakes, vegetables and chicken. Although tourists can’t take a smoldering rope back home, they can partake of the okera sake served until the early hours of the New Year to pray for good fortune.
